Things to do in Madrid in November

There are still many things to do in Madrid in November since the weather is still good.

Fall days are lovely with lots of sunny hours, the parks’ tree leaves change from dozens of green to becomes yellowish and brownish and you can still have a coffee or a hot chocolate at a terraza.

November is a relatively quiet month before the Christmas fanfare.

My favorite things to do in Madrid in November

November 9th: La Almudena. The Virgen de la Almudena is the patroness of Madrid and this day is a local holiday. There is usually a large mass in the Plaza Mayor followed by a procession back to the Cathedral. The procession is lead by chulapos and chulapas dressed in traditional clothing. It is a good chance of getting to see Madrileños wearing what they normally don’t.

Christmas Lights: On the last Friday of the month the major of Madrid inaugurates the Christmas lights to fill the city with a magical air. These beautiful illuminations are a sight to be seen and you shouldn’t miss some of the best decorations following a Christmas Lights walk.

You should visit Madrid in November because

  • The city is relatively calm and empty before the Christmas turmoil.
  • It’s almost the beginning of the Christmas season.
  • Airfares and lodging prices are considerably lower than in December.

On the contrary go to Madrid at some other time of the year if

  • You don’t like Christmas preparations.
  • You are looking to wear sandals and short sleeves.
